Welcome to the NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards 2024

The NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards acknowledge the passion, dedication and amazing contribution of nurses and midwives have on the health outcomes of patients, women and families across NSW.

In 2024 the awards will include seven local health district and specialty network-nominated awards, one consumer-nominated Healing Heart award and one colleague-nominated Healing Heart award.





Healing Heart Award

Healing Heart Award – Consumer nominated

We invite patients, families and carers to recognise an outstanding nurse or midwife for a Healing Heart Award. This award acknowledges a nurse or midwife who elevates the patient experience by building connection with patients/women and their families through trust, kindness, and empowerment.

Healing Heart Award – Colleague nominated

We invite NSW Health staff to nominate a nursing or midwifery colleague for a Healing Heart Award - Colleague nominated. This award acknowledges a nurse or midwife who elevates the patient experience by building connection with patients/women and their families through trust, kindness, and empowerment.

All other categories will be entered by local health districts and specialty networks and will not be accepted here.

We encourage NSW Health staff to seek information about your local processes to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions of your colleagues for all other awards.

Awards Categories

New to Practice Nurse/Midwife of the Year

This award recognises nursing/midwifery graduates who have shown exceptional potential during their first year of practice

This RN/RM demonstrates passion and commitment to the provision of quality, safe and compassionate care to patients/women and to their own learning opportunities.

Aboriginal Nurse/Midwife of the Year award (Enrolled Nurse, Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife)

This award recognises an outstanding Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander nurse or midwife who demonstrates exceptional commitment to the provision of quality, safe, compassionate and culturally appropriate health care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples and/or communities

This nurse/midwife is committed to improving care and advocating for better delivery of healthcare services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and/or communities.

Team of the Year Award (Nursing and/or Midwifery Team)

This is awarded to a nursing/midwifery team which provides service/program/initiatives that benefit the patients/women/consumers or community and enhances patient and staff experience.

The team excels in effective collaboration both with each other and with others outside their team, and collectively supports the CORE values and initiatives of NSW Health.

Judith Meppem Lifetime Achievement Award

This award recognises the contribution of an outstanding nurse or midwife who, throughout their career, has had a positive and sustained influence on patients, the health system, and their profession.

This award recognises a nurse or midwife who demonstrates outstanding leadership in the areas of clinical care, management, education, or research.

Nurse of the Year (AIN/EN/RN)

This Award recognises an AIN/EN/RN who has made an outstanding contribution in providing and coordinating safe, quality and compassionate patient care and consistently displaying the values of commitment, compassion, resilience, professionalism and collaboration.

This nurse shows commitment to and passion for the nursing profession, going the "extra mile" demonstrating a "can do" positive attitude

Midwife of the Year (AIM/RM)

This award recognises an AIM/RM who has made an outstanding contribution in providing and coordinating safe, quality and compassionate woman-centred care who consistently displays the values of commitment, compassion, resilience, professionalism and collaboration.

This Award recognises commitment to and passion for the midwifery profession, going the "extra mile" demonstrating a "can do" positive attitude

Healing Heart Award (Consumer Award)

This is a consumer-nominated Award to recognise a nurse/midwife who consistently provides extraordinary, safe, quality and compassionate care.

This nurse or midwife will demonstrate an uncompromising commitment to elevating the patient experience by building connection with patients/women and their families through trust, kindness and empowerment.

Healing Heart Award-Colleague Nominated (NSW Health staff)

This is a colleague-nominated award that acknowledges an outstanding nurse/midwife that is an inspiration and role model to others for their compassion, commitment to workplace culture, improving the patient/woman’s experience and providing safe, quality care.

Award Rules

  1. The nurse, midwife or team being nominated must be employees of NSW Health. This awards initiative is to celebrate the work of nurses and midwives working in the NSW public health system.
  2. Each Local Health District (LHD) / Specialty Network (SN) can nominate one person for each of the award categories (excluding the Healing Heart award Consumer category and Healing Heart award Colleague category), and one team for the team category award.
  3. LHD/SN nominations will be allocated to one identified representative (Nomination Coordinator) to enable a coordinated approval and nomination approach. Nominations in all Award categories (except consumer award) are encouraged from NSW Health staff but must be submitted via the LHD representative (except colleague award) for consideration and approval. Final approval of nomination will rest with District Director of Nursing and Midwifery for each LHD/SN.
  4. If a nominee has been a finalist in any category in previous years they shall not be re-considered in that category, or a similar category for three years.
  5. If a nominee has been a winner in previous year’s they will not be considered in a similar category again.
  6. A person cannot be nominated in more than one category in the same year except if they make up part of a team that has been nominated.
  7. Hard copy nominations will not be accepted – only online submissions via the nomination portal will be accepted.
  8. Nominators must provide the full contact details for themselves and their nominee, including nominee work address and ward name, email address and phone number and managers contact details.
  9. Incomplete nominations will not be followed up and will not be considered.
  10. The judge's decision is final, and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.
  11. 11. Privacy - Personal information about nominees and nominators provided will only be used for the purposes of assessing and judging of the nomination in the NSW Health Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.
  12. Healing Heart Award - Consumer Nominated
  13. This Healing Heart award is for nominations of nurses and midwives by consumers of healthcare in NSW public hospitals. Consumers include; patients and clients or carers and support persons of patients and clients.

    - All nominees will be advised of the person who nominated them for a Healing Heart award.

    - Nominators must provide the full contact details for themselves and their nominee, including nominee work address and ward name, email address and phone number and date of experience.

  14. Healing Heart Award - Colleague Nominated
  15. This Healing Heart award for colleagues is for nominations of nurses and midwives by their peers within NSW public health facilities. Peers include; Nurses and midwives, managers, other medical or allied health professionals and other members of the hospital staff including administration and support staff.

    - All nominees will be advised of the person who nominated them for a Healing Heart award for colleagues.

    - Nominators must provide the full contact details for themselves and their nominee, including nominee work address and ward name, email address and phone number and date of experience.
