Acrylic painting of brother underwater captured in backyard pool.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Oh to be young again! The carefree nature of bombing into a freezing pool in the middle of winter, the disjointed tan lines or the never- ending game of Marco polo where the cheating starts the second the head goes under. This sense of freedom is one I am envious of. Looking into the eyes of my brother now feels like the only way I can cling to these carefree moments. The thought of loosing my swimmers to the blue abyss, the chill of the water hitting me with full force or the chlorine eating away at the fake tan now flood my thoughts. As hard as I try I can’t I still see the wonder and opportunities he sees underwater anymore. All I can see clearly is him. Is it just me or are you the same? Have I lost the magic forever?

ARTWORK PROCESS

From photographing Noah [brother] in the backyard pool there was a range of images that could be used as inspiration to form a painting. From this image I painted him in a slightly impressionist yet realistic technique.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ella Baxter

I have been a strong supporter and believer of the Arts throughout my schooling and found myself gravitating in high school to both Performing and Visual Arts. I understand the importance that Arts holds and value its ability to allow for a voice for those not only telling their story or opinions but for those who get the privilege of viewing and engaging in the works.
