ARTIST STATEMENT

Change occurs inevitably throughout life as a result of growth and evolution. My artworks represent a journey of change and transformation from a personal context. Through the use of coloured pen, pencil and watercolour I explored intricacies of self-portraiture. The drawings show contrast between realistic colour and black and white which reflects my personal growth. Exploring the human experience through the use of visual elements: colour, line and repetition, I hope to evoke a response from the audience and encourage them to to reflect on their own life experiences. Ultimately, the metaphor of my artworks convey change, by embracing the beauty of growth and cultivating self-awareness we can attain a deeper understanding of ourselves.

ARTWORK PROCESS

My artwork is a series of three self-portrait drawings. The first portrait shows a vibrant palette of colours blended with intricate cross-hatching using coloured pen and watercolour. The second portrait explores the juxtaposition of colour, black and white using cross-hatching, contour lines and watercolour. The third portrait is a detailed contour drawing using fine pen which is accentuated by a dark watercolour background. The three portraits represent changing emotions such as passion, inspiration and concentration.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sierra Pollard

As a Year 12 student at Craigslea State High School, I enjoy creating artworks that represent personal experiences. Studying Visual Art allows me to express my thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. In the future I will continue to create art for my own well-being and enjoyment. After finishing Year 12, I hope to study Psychology or Art Therapy.
