ARTIST STATEMENT

Last Breath (2023) is a still life tableau in a cultural context, set within a gritty, richly textured urban landscape layered with embedded meaning through media. The face of this urban environment is stained with soot and tears, visibly scarred by the effects of pollution, and filled with symbolic evidence of warnings long ignored. Emerging from the darkness, streetlight captures the defiantly pure white breast of a bird as it lies dying, its beak open, gasping for air. The cruel irony of its death can be seen in its enlarged nostrils, caked in pollution; in its attempt to breathe more air in the search for oxygen, it has condemned itself to suffocation. Last Breath serves as both mourning and warning, forcing the audience to consider that in rapidly changing the conditions of our planet at a pace outstripping nature’s capacity to adapt, we condemn all creatures to inevitable extinction.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Through a cultural context, I have explored how animals could adapt to our contemporary environment based on my current observations of increasing urban pollution. Last Breath (2021) takes inspiration from multiple vastly different artists, juxtaposing Elias Vonck's 17th century oil stills with Stanley Donwood's apocalyptic contemporary abstract works, and drawing from Anna Maja Czech's use of aged paper and darkly distorted, grisly anatomy. I utilise design elements such as value, colour and intricate texture to create a sombre and mournful atmosphere, encouraging audiences to confront the current trajectory of society’s inaction on climate and the dire consequences this will

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Grace Beebe

I have always found myself fascinated by the macabre and morbid, the darkly atmospheric and haunting. My paintings often contain eerie scenes with the aim to unsettle or disturb. As a young person rising into a rapidly changing world, these themes are inseparably intertwined with my deep concern for the future, and I am driven to artistically protest current events and the dire consequences of our actions on the environment. Complex gritty textures in multimedia add intricate depth, creating a multi-dimensional tactile experience alongside the aesthetic and emotional, and overall igniting environmental conversation and change.
