ARTIST STATEMENT

In the 2022 Queensland floods my family home got flooded in, and as did many homes in Australia. I collected the flood water and took pictures of the piles of waste as a reminder of the destruction and with the hope of using it in an artwork. This piece is a drawing of my home on a wooden board, reminiscent of weatherboard QLD homes. I pour the flood water over my home to the exact place the floods reached – replicating the rain bomb that drenched our city.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Uttara Hingu

As a person of faith, concepts such as the purpose of life and existence are frequently on my mind, however often a more negative side is generally overlooked. Considering my relatively sheltered life, during these last few years I have become acutely aware of fragility of life. This exhibition - Death, Decay and Destruction explores generally undiscussed, undesirable aspects of existence that have become commonplace in our world. Ranging from large to minor issues, this exhibition highlights concepts of consumerism, waste, natural disasters, loss of innocence as well as grief after death.
