ARTWORK DETAILS

Chunxi Liu
Gaze of Expectation Graphite drawings and acrylic painting on craft paper
Series (of 4) individually: 42.0cm x 29.7cm

ARTIST STATEMENT

This series positions the audience to feel judged from the gazes of the four subjects, simulating the emotional trauma of social anxiety. Societal pressure is expressed through the brooding, disappointed, weary and saddened expressions exacerbated by the piercing stares. The contrast between the incomplete two-dimensional sketch and the realistic eyes creates a sense of depth; the photorealistic acrylic of the eyes is redolent of Egon Schiele’s portraits.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chunxi Liu

Looking back, the progression of my practical skills, as demonstrated through my increased recognition of the significance of materiality and composition, parallels my development as an adolescent approaching the end of my schooling years. As such, I have developed a greater appreciation for art as an instigator of self-growth.
