ARTIST STATEMENT
'Lows' is visceral and primitive and presents my fear of running out of time and my desperate longing to leave a meaningful mark. This work is an exploration into my desire to exist out of time. I wish to portray my deepest thoughts and the worries that plague me. Inspired by the work of Jean Michel Basquiat my fears and critiques are addressed formally through the direct manipulation of colour achieved by digital manipulation of an original mixed media composition. In the personal context, primal emotions resonate predominately through colour, my pictograms and social and cultural commentary are given life and a chance to vent.
ARTWORK PROCESS
My work is about the pressure of time. The thoughts and emotions that inspired an original mixed media composition failed to demonstrate the intensity that I felt. Working in a similar street art style inspired by Jean Michel Basquiat I wanted to embrace the immediacy and brightness reflected in his practice. The initial result lacked power, but through manipulation of colour and saturation digitally I was able to fully expose the threatening and urgent nature of my thoughts in relation to the passing of time (and deadlines).
