ARTIST STATEMENT
Terra’s 4 is a projection work that utilizes photographic compositions as digital collage. It depicts the four elements, fire, water, air and earth. According to Greek philosophy, these elements are fundamental in formulating the existence of the universe and physical concepts of earth. Additionally, Terra’s 4 explores the factors that make up natural aspects of existence and observable reality. It is this reality that influences these four elements as archetypes or characters. Four frames are dedicated to each differing element and is represented by the image being projected onto a figure. The figure is positioned according to specific characteristics of the allocated element.
ARTWORK PROCESS
When creating Terra’s4, it was crucial to discover and develop ideas to represent each of the earth’s elements. Planning how the elements would be displayed, what they would look like when personified. I was inspired to work with projection art and photography and motivated to portray the elements as archetypes. I gathered various options for imagery which would be projected. I sketched types of movement and posing I envisioned and selected final four images that would be projected. One image was projected onto the figure at a time, then edited to achieve the desired effect as a photocollage.
