The Age of the Gooseflower Painting
Diptych of appropriated pelican painting behind Perspex with two see through images of a pelican in white wooden frame

ARTIST STATEMENT

This work pays homage to the pelican species and explores ideas about the misfortune and trauma it endures, presenting the detrimental impact caused by the human footprint. Hypothetically, the work projects a futuristic environment where the pelican species has become extinct. The deliberate use of transparent, multiple layers aims to heighten the idea of the preserved animal as an extinct artifact in a museum. Metaphorically, it represents the failure of humans and nature to coexist and is an expressed call to action. Deliberate appropriation of Marian Drew’s still-life work “Australiana” aligns with my idea to portray the demise of the ‘Gooseflower’.

ARTWORK PROCESS

To construct my work, I first directly onto a textured canvas using acrylic paint and posca pen for additional detail. To create the transparent layer, I used a thick plastic layer. Finally, I used white posca pen to write the information. For the skeletal portion of my work, I used acrylic paints and fine line posca pens to paint directly onto two sheets of transparent, A4 plastic. A wooden frame was then built and painted to attach the two portions to become one final piece. The frame was built with wood, screws and painted with white house paint.
