Edges of the City Installation
Beeswax and string formations on wooden window frame

ARTIST STATEMENT

This work responds to the natural environment's gradual reclamation of what is lost to urban expansion, pressing up against the brutalist structures we build to keep the natural world in check. Irregular shapes lay across the window, reflecting the constant shifts from order to disorder occurring in cities. The elements, based on a grid pattern, reveal the co-dependent relationships we have with both the natural and built environments. My work reflects how nature has become enmeshed in urban infrastructure that we need to seek it out as something exceptional, as opposed to an ordinary part of the world we inhabit.

ARTWORK PROCESS

After sanding down and preparing the window I nailed the wax tiles in at different heights. The tiles were created by layering melted beeswax over glad wrap with a string grid pattern on top.
