ARTIST STATEMENT

My work focuses on the juxtaposition of extravagance and the destruction it is built from. By creating and using materials which must be destroyed or dismantled in order to be used, I have exploited the symbolism of a perceived necessity of ruin and the manipulation of power which builds on the advantages of damage. Additionally, the ambiguity of the waves appearing as a doona or the edge of the world satirizes the idea of built godhood by implying an innate humanity, inflated by ego and blind to its’ own faults.

ARTWORK PROCESS

My artwork was created by combining hand-drawn and painted components that were cut out and glued onto large-segmented pieces of paper. The use of collage and handmade paint utilised the formal context of materials which must first be destroyed in order to be used. This theme was continued through using materials such as handmade paint which is made of crushed up rocks, collage which must be cut into pieces and charcoal which is smudged and deformed to form shape.
