ARTIST STATEMENT

“A higher power” explores the expressive potential of a simple gesture. Whether you see a religious person calling on a higher power or someone at breaking point drawing on their inner reserves of strength, we have all experienced this feeling. We question our existence and our God (or lack of); our body language inevitably reflects us. This artwork contemplates internal pain, loss and angst. There is so much we don’t know about each other and sometimes it’s easier to hide because we are too afraid to reveal our truth. However, there is connection and mutual understanding found in sharing our realities.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Charcoal drawing based on student's own reference photo. Photographs taken in student's bathroom. Photographs inspired by oil paintings of Alyssa Monks (using water over portraiture as a textural and emotive motif). Relevant part of inquiry question: How do artists manipulate visual language and expression to convey their personal concerns?
