ARTIST STATEMENT
Unravelling follows the story of a woman, who eventually loses all sense of herself. It highlights how her journey has resulted in losing integral internal organs and other parts of herself, leaving her somewhat inhuman. This narrative is aided through the transition of colours, illustrating her “unravelling”. The shadows parallel her story, in a darker light, offering two intertwined narratives that refer to both light and dark aspects of the self and identity. The panels shift between physical forms and floating bodily organs, linear brushstrokes and fine threaded lines, indicating a physical, psychological and emotional journey.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The work draws on the investigation of mythological creatures, and storytelling. The piece is both intuitive and draws on anatomical references. The chosen surface for this work, Perspex, was chosen because of the significance of shadows cast. This was inspired by the work of Nalini Malani. The creation of shadows was important in order to convey two intertwined stories. With acrylic paint, layering was used to achieve different levels of opacity and textures. Some lines were achieved with thick paint to create texture, leaving raw brush marks. Other washes and textures were created with diluted paint.
