ARTIST STATEMENT
Human beings are both gifted and burdened with mortality; the limitation of time. Memento mori, the artistic and historical concept has fascinated artists for centuries reminding us; “remember you must die.” Familiar representations of life and humanity seen in animated facial expression and intimate eye contact are juxtaposed with confronting symbols of death that form a narrative that invites and forces the audience to reflect on the psychological context of conflictions within mortality. In essence, this work seeks to comment on the human condition of mortality and its associated psychological complications.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The artist spent time storyboarding and conceptualising ideas before filming himself in a dark room, as was a skull against a green screen, and boiling water. This footage were compiled together, edited, and colour corrected to create the work. The work is intended to be projected when viewed.
