ARTIST STATEMENT
‘The Ripple Effect’ explores the process of our beach environment from natural to manmade; through the layering of discarded found materials. Each layer represents a ripple of water from our local beach. However, the effects of each ripple progressively show the negative impacts of human visitors to our iconic beach landscapes. The juxtaposition of the calming sounds of waves and the projected movement of water, with the disgusting human debris; brings to question the impact of humans who visit and live along our Australian coastlines. We visit our beaches for the calm, but leave waste as a thank you.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Layered beach sand over the artwork, with found objects such as fish shop paper, cigarettes, and plastic bottles. A film projection of the local beach waves over the artwork, with an accompanying audio of beach sounds as an auditory layer. The audience to sit in front of the projection to imprint their shadow over the work while experiencing the beach waves and sounds, while their visual senses go over the discarded objects.
