ARTIST STATEMENT
Memory, the most speculated aspect of the mind; at once intangible and ephemeral as it is a measure of time and experience. Symbols and imagery reference the familiar and shared experience; the face, speaks of living and identity. Is it emerging? Is it fading out? Is it imagined or real? Coloured pencil embodies childhood experience and emphasise aging and place. Patches of colour and lack thereof, seek to confront the unknown future. Iris seeks to comment on the mind; how humans hold memory, how they are shaped by the experiences they encounter and how they develop through time and aging.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The face in this work was drawn from memory rather than a photographic image as it is central to the concept. Drawn larger than life and with coloured pencils to reference childhood and the fleeting nature of memory, this work has been left 'unfinished' to further enhance the symbolism.
