‘Them’ Painting
Distortion is seen through an abstract lens with Body Modification and gender as a form of disfiguration.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Throughout the year I have researched and investigated the theme of distortion and have cultivated my own perspective of what that means. I have a particular interest in unconventional forms of distortion and accordingly have portrayed a non-binary figure disfigured by body modification in the form of tattoos and piercings. This is a successful presentation of distortion as the body is viewed through a new lens, playing on the distorted assumptions one might make purely based on the expression of body modification. Furthermore, I have presented my figure as non-binary to highlight judgment of the body and the insignificant role gender plays in the respect

ARTWORK PROCESS

Working on a large scale I divided a canvas down the centre painting one half black and the other deep blue. With chalk, I sketched a non-binary figure, followed the centre line and used contrasting colours to paint the figure's body. Piercing details on the ears and nipples were added with paint, and sailor tattoos were collaged to the chest and arms of the figure. Supporting elements are seen through a held cigarette and a bottle of wine to the left of the figure. A final refinement is seen through a layer of gloss.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Anna Barker

– Born in 2004 and raised in South Africa I migrated to Brisbane, Australia in 2019. Through my Steiner education, I have cultivated a curiosity about the deeper meaning of the creative arts. Moving through my 12th year of schooling at Samford Valley Steiner school I have had the opportunity to independently explore distortion physically, mentally, and emotionally proceeding to display my perspective of my findings through an exhibit of 4 pieces. Throughout my schooling, I have strived to explore an invested perspective of what art means to me and will continue to do so after my upcoming graduation.
