Wandaaba Mixed media, Spraypaint, Acrylic and Ink
My feminine and masculine Indigenous ancestors surrounded by their culture and the loss imposed upon them.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Wandaaba explores masculinity and femininity through Indigenous cultural contexts, using traditional and colonial perspectives and focus ‘spirits’. Wandaaba explores the sexualisation of Indigenous women and criminalisation of Indigenous men. The two outer panel figures, painted black, contrast markings and surroundings representing how colour has defined Indigenous people within ‘White Australia’. Binary opposites – male and female, colonial ideologies and Indigenous culture are significant within Wandaaba. Contemporary and traditional symbolism creates the sense that the old ways endure despite overshadowing by new ways. By presenting these struggles, Wandaaba unites the two groups. Despite violent oppression, Indigenous men and women maintain ancestral strength.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The process of this artwork evolved from experimentation with spirit figures and knowledge about invasion. The core of my artwork was rooted with symbolism and family experiences. My primary intention was to explore the different experiences and violations of Indigenous men and women. From this experimentation I then started developing my resolved pieces.
