ARTIST STATEMENT
Coming from a family of generational surfers, I feel an intrinsic, personal connection to sea creatures. Through exploring formal printmaking techniques, A Passing Glimpse takes an alternative perspective through formal and contemporary contexts. Delvene Cockatoo-Collins and Glen Skein inspired me to explore questions of identity through memory, place and symbolism. Large and small photographic and non-photographic screenprints and etchings depict ethereal, sometimes nostalgic moments and symbolic thoughts, with underlying narratives close to my heart. Using my favourite sea creatures, including my grandma, I use repetition, unity and perspective to guide thoughts towards the general threat posed on our ocean's ecosystem.
ARTWORK PROCESS
A selection of prints was chosen and collaged, forming the resolved piece which incorporates both etchings and screen-prints. The traditional etching technique in which the lines are incised onto a metal plate using acid was used to depict a couple of my favourite sea creatures with an aged look. The figurative screen-prints are a metaphorical homage to my connection with these creatures, brought to life by orange and blue contrasting inks. The photographic screen-prints of myself and my grandmother were converted to black and white and printed with the digital screen maker, before printing numerous times with acrylic paint.
