To Smell a Rat Painting
2 x A2 acrylic paintings on black paper

ARTIST STATEMENT

Everyday we use sayings that compare our situations to animals; “you can't teach an old dog new tricks”. These expressions bring humour to our actions, and in some cases make light of things that aren’t so humorous. Politics is serious business, however I can't help but laugh at the ridiculous decisions that are often made. Scott Morrison's Australia Day interaction with former Australian of the Year, Grace Tame, was a key moment in our political history. The rat is seen smiling, the lioness sees through him. Just because a lion is tame doesn't make it any less of a lion.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I investigated how animals have been personified through other artists work and the symbolism created through this. The small textured brushstrokes and realistic style engage the audience making them consider who and what the portraits are about. The subtle hints with carefully chosen clothing make the characters recognisable but not at first glance.
