Withered Sculpture
Series of four ceramic porcelain sculptures assembled as a wall installation.

ARTIST STATEMENT

'Withered' is a series of porcelain sculptures that symbolise the psychological and spiritual self-perception of ancient Chinese women who were influenced by the corrupt feudal system of that era. Each portrait represents the suffering of women from the past, individually adorned in gold, red and white glazes. Gold in traditional Chinese culture represents prosperity and an integrated representation of something that all humans desire. The tears and cracked surface of the decaying portraits with covered mouths and wilting flowers are all in contrast to the gold that represents money and power. My work is an ode to my ancestors and the life that they endured.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Each portrait was constructed with porcelain clay and then glazed. D-hooks glued to the back of each piece and assembled with wire for hanging on the wall.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Yvonne Xiong

My artwork is influenced by my perception of women as a child living in China, especially my grandmother's generation. I enjoy working with diverse media and techniques to communicate to my audience from a personal and cultural context using symbolic and traditional objects. I am also inspired by Johnson Tsang's 'Lucid Dream II' series of anthropomorphic sculptures in surrealist techniques. His work influenced me to use ironic and expressive techniques to challenge the viewer to enter the inner and sensual world of the ancient Chinese women masked behind the sculptures.
