ARTIST STATEMENT
Welcome to the 2022 Miss Pandemic Pageant! We have the following statement from the winner of this year’s pageant:
“Winning Miss Pandemic 2022 has been one of the biggest highlights of my life! I've worked so hard at being discriminated against in this COVID-19 season. It is my honour to be crowned Miss Pandemic 2022”
This artwork although confronting is a vulnerable and raw representation of racial discrimination and Anti-Asian Hate.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I designed three beauty pageant sashes 160cm x 16cm each using the titles ‘Miss Dirty Immigrant’, ‘Miss Dog-Eater’, ‘Miss COVID-19 Pig’ which were embroidered by a seamstress. I photographed a series of faux pageant award photographs and selected one to fit a sourced a 10cm x 15cm Frame to represent the Miss Pandemic winner image. The sourced Golden Trophy 27cm x 5cm with a 4cm x 6cm was engraved with the award ‘Miss Pandemic’. The golden chopsticks and dog were sourced at an op shop.
