ARTIST STATEMENT
Growing up has been a consistent dread since I was young, and has caused me to postpone expected milestones.
'Atlas’ Solitude' materialises these feelings as an abstract landscape where symbols of maturing fall from the sky,
forming a beast-like mound. Literally dominating the piece is a massive pile of objects about to collapse on the person
huddled underneath, contrasting the neatly organised stacks in the distance, symbolising the seemingly
overwhelming amount of expectations I’ve put off because it feels overwhelming. People wander together in the light, burdenless, but the huddled person sits in shadow, isolated by their own fear and aversion to progress forward.
ARTWORK PROCESS
This piece forms part of my body of work that explores a personal context as I look toward my immediate future of assessment and exams and the future of my education and life's journey ahead. I used digital sketching to plan the composition of this work and explore colour palettes that effectively communicated my intended message. I settled on the bright, warm red palette, contrasting with deep greens and greys to convey a sense of danger and urgency as time ticks by around me. I was inspired by the colour palette and composition of Shaun Tan's book: 'The Lost Thing'.
