ARTIST STATEMENT
The concept of self is ever-changing. The constant passage of time separates us from our past selves, and it can be difficult to think that you’re not who you used to want to be. Epoch (Self-Reflection) illustrates the choice to let go of the judgements your past selves would make of you, for better or worse. It also examines when or if a distinction can be made between a past self and your next epoch. A thread of connection and time is held by a gallery of imperfect reflections; the present self releases the thread, and the past’s judgements.
ARTWORK PROCESS
After brainstorming and idea generation, concept art was sketched. Reference photos were taken using a camera and a mirror, and their colour digitally altered. Using the concept sketch and reference photos, the artwork was sketched onto the canvas with pencil. From the reference, the figures were painted with acrylic paint, working up from dark to light tones. The background was painted, from light to dark. The artwork was spray varnished before a purple embroidery thread was woven through the canvas with a sewing needle.
