ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork: ‘Why Did Dad Leave Mum?’ references Photographer LaToya Ruby Frazier’s image of a demolished house to represent community damage. I chose a burning house to represent the break down of my parents marital status and the effects that this has had on my identity. I have painted the house in the height of burning destruction where the fire has engulfed everything and has an intensity. It is on the precipice of demolishing; the viewer understanding the consequence of such reality. In my work, I am reflecting on this significant traumatic event that has changed my life story.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Initially I explored performative imagery through melodramatic scenes in art to evoke an emotional response from the audience. The choice of imagery was to incite similar feelings in the viewer to the ones I felt during my parents' marriage break down. Using strong imagery to portray a deeper meaning enabled me to confront a moment that was a significant event, provoking change.
