ARTIST STATEMENT
Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea, quickly declining in health due to anthropogenic effects. Crocheted Colourless Corallium explores the concept of science and art, focusing on increasing awareness surrounding the 21st century issue of coral bleaching. Crochet is a tedious, time-consuming traditional textile, generally used to create blankets and clothes. Instead, I have utilised this delicate medium, and lack of colour, to allude to the current fragility of our oceans. I encourage you to observe details, similar to snorkelling in a reef. As the next generation, we have a duty to preserve the environment for the future.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The student experimented with different ways to represent the fragility of our oceans and in particular, coral bleaching. These including printmaking, paper cuts and other traditional craft processes such as quilling. The student then experimented with crocheting wool into sculptural forms.
