Family Foundations Painting and Sculpture
1x acrylic on canvas; 1x ceramic sculpture with ephemeral botanical (living plant and soil)

ARTIST STATEMENT

'Family Foundation' explores generational trauma passed down a symbolic family tree– a fragile bionetwork that can easily be tainted by toxic soils and souls. The figure, with its head tucked between its legs, is a subliminal representation of mental and physical strain. There is a cut out in the back allowing roots to grow out, symbolising the human nervous system and connecting generational trauma to genetics. This plant, a cauliflower, is also featured in the painting, referencing the hundreds of years of genetic breeding that ended in its creation. A surreal scene, I see myself in faces of farmed flora.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Reflecting upon generational trauma, Jobran created a ceramic pot plant through clay modelling and glazing processes, that houses a Cauliflower seedling. He also painted surrealist rows of farmed Cauliflower plants with alternating faces peering at the viewer, using acrylic painting techniques.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jobran Al-Roumi

Jobran's practice has developed to explore concepts around mental health issues related to childhood trauma and family dynamics, as well as society's expectations of the female body and how this is perceived. He is drawn to a Surrealist style, often engaging with symbols such as the body and natural elements, working with a range of mediums from ceramic sculpture and ephemeral photography, to acrylic painting and mixed media drawing.
