ARTIST STATEMENT
Ground Hog Day: tedious events that appear to be recurring in exactly the same way. My work explores themes of mental health, isolation and extreme forms of privacy. My character is in a loop that implies never ending isolation as he moves from one room to an exact replica, only to continue the same activity as the last. The work is informed by Hikikomori syndrome, an extreme social disorder most prevalent in adolescents and young adults. Where people exclude themselves from society and refuse to leave their house, often living with parents or close friends and having little or no contact with them.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The animation process consisted of six layers to each frame: sketching, foreground colouring, blocking in background shades, foreground shading, ambient shaded light effects and darkening the background. Music and sound effects created in Garage Band.
Video must be viewed in a loop as the subject moves from one room to another.
