ARTIST STATEMENT
Most photographs nowadays are caged up in photo frames. I projected my slideshow onto a wall, which allowed my photographs to breathe. The smooth, monochromatic black and white shades from Ilford’s FP4 acted as a catalyst which gave me freedom to create a story while also being challenged taking the photos. Atmospheric portraiture was chosen as the photographic style, which developed my portfolio. The order for the photographs was purposeful, displaying a story that was used as creative motivation. Photography has always been an escape, which presented me with opportunities of personal expression.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I brainstormed on how I could incorporate atmosphere into my photography in an alternative approach. I ended up on the concept of atmospheric portraits. To challenge my creative thinking, I decided to use 35mm analogue film. I used a roll of Ilford’s FP4. My model and I travelled to Stradbroke Island and found an area close to the beach with varying trees and nature. I then shot the roll both with and without an external flash. After film development and scans, I chose 6 out of the 36 exposures to project onto a wall with incorporated background brown noise.
