ARTIST STATEMENT
I wanted to convey the meaning of my values that emerge through objects stored and treasured, by people, inside of buildings. I first inquired if “architectural buildings reflect my personal, and contemporary time-scape?” For a very long time, I have admired dragons, in particular the Chinese dragon. I’m not Chinese but this dragon still has a connection to my culture – Vietnamese. My culture has always considered the dragon to symbolise power and nobility, known as, ‘Long’ a Vietnamese methodology – a time-scape, one that travels back to my ancestors and cultural heritage.
ARTWORK PROCESS
This is a hand-built form using the pinch and slab technique. The clay is white raku. The sculpted dragon was made using pinch pot method and coils. The dragon form is hollow. It was bisque fired. Englobe was painted on the surface and simple motif was printed over the dragon form, to reflect my cultural heritage. The last process was to brush three coats of clear glaze over the entire form. It was fired at 1080 degrees Celsius in a kiln.
