ARTIST STATEMENT
Reflection and Perception explores vulnerability by illustrating my characteristics and documenting my personal view on the world. My figure at the core of this piece is integral in motivating others to conduct their own self-reflection. In my investigation of differing perspectives of beauty and identity, I developed an intimate connection to these concepts as an artist, thus posing the questions: ‘who am I?’ and ‘what do I consider beautiful?’ Viewed through a personal lens, I invite others to understand that people define and perceive beauty and identity differently based on their experiences, their environment, and the context of their perception.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I began my work by sketching out my figure from a reference photo then painting the base colours, refining the shading details along the way. I then completed the grey backgrounds of the 4 smaller canvases, filled in the anatomy details with markers, glued on the various found objects and attached them to the larger canvases. Following this, I finished the final details for the hair, feet, and hands and worked on several pencil sketches and watercolour paintings in A4 and A5 journals, which I would later cut out and glue into a blank A3 sketchbook on the music stand.
