ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork, Kookaburras Laugh, is a visual representation of one of the Australian Indigenous creation stories, How the Sun was Made. In this story, the kookaburra was given the job of announcing the day to the land, which is what my artwork represents. My painting features a sunrise in the background, with trees and large amounts of grass in the foreground. The land is bare to represent the animals sleeping. It features a kookaburra flying in the direction of the night, away from the day, representing his job of announcing the day to the animals of the land.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I have constructed my painting using handprints and fingerprints. There are a number of layers to show the variety of colours of the sunrise and the natural environment. The Kookaburra was the final image that was carefully applied using my fingerprints to show the feathers and details of the bird.
