Warped Figures Photograph
This piece is a collage of photos, cut and overlapped, altering the proportions to achieve a distortion of the body.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Throughout my Year 12 journey with Art, I experimented with distortion of the body. I began using water, as it distorts faces, then became interested in photography and began taking photos of people’s faces and cutting them out. I loved the idea of folding and distortion and explored the theme through this medium.

ARTWORK PROCESS

First I printed images of friends’ faces, then cut them out in a manner designed to create distortion and movement. I began with large surfaces and then glued smaller cut-outs on top to achieve a topographical, layered effect. Because each layer is slightly different in shape, the final image has obtained a distortion of reality. The overlapping of irregular shapes creates a fascinating outcome.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Greta Cashion

I was born in 2003 and spent my early childhood in Tasmania, where I went to a Steiner School. At the age of 8, I moved to Brisbane. During this move I was homeschooled for a year and I spent a lot of time sculpting and painting as there was so much spare time. I chose Art in Year 12 as I have more access and can express myself more. I have always done Art growing up, whether it was painting, building, sculpting or beeswax, and have been going to a Steiner School throughout.
