For You Created My Innermost Being Sculpture
A large(118cm diameter) circular woven sculpture of hand made papers with an overlay of a video projection.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For You Created my innermost being, explores my relationship with religious guilt. Experiences with Catholicism continue to plague my daily life with warped perceptions of what is ‘sinful’ and ‘righteous’. These instilled ideas continue to leave me questioning my very existence. The repetitive nature of the weaving symbolises guilt and how it can manifest within a person, resurfacing repeatedly. Video projection is used over the dreamcatcher to further showcase the impact of guilt within me, creating a dialog between the audience and artist as they part take in the same religious mass I was subjected to as a child.

ARTWORK PROCESS

To create this piece, I have deconstructed and reconstructed The Holy Bible by ripping apart it`s pages and creating new paper from its pulp. Referencing a Dream Catcher, these new papers were torn up yet again to create a large circular weave that radiates from small to large. As the pages within the weave grow larger, they begin to twist and contort over themselves revealing deep crevices of shadow. The video projection is a manipulated recording of a church mass similar to those from my childhood, with text overlay highlighting a call-to-response with the viewer.
