ARTIST STATEMENT
I wanted to explore the interrelationship between humanity and flora and fauna through a personal and cultural understanding. I drew inspiration from the likes of the Superflat art movement and Kenta Torii’s pieces that are reminiscent of ancient Chinese art. With these contexts in mind, I generated an artwork that is deeply personal to me and my culture. Through the manipulation of various media such as wire, acrylic and watercolour paint, I was able to mimic the very essence of ancient Asian art in a more contemporary and stylised form.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Firstly, I started making the human figure. The foundation of my figure was made of wire. Then I covered it with duct tape to create a strong and solid base and to ensure that the wire doesn’t bend underneath the layer of paper mache. Initially I stuck a layer of masking tape over the duct tape layer however it made the figure’s surface rougher and more crumpled. I also made the head out of modelling clay as the wire head base I tried to create did not work out. I then painted and attached a watercolour artwork.
