Black Eyed Deluge Installation
My artwork Black eyed deluge, is a hanging textile map and a painted calico raincoat.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The 2022 NSW floods were one of the nation’s worst recorded flood disasters. "Black Eyed Deluge" explores the way these recent floods have affected locals. Each aspect of my artwork reflects a different part played in the floods. The abstract influenced map reflects the confusing and inaccurate depiction of the flood maps used during the crisis through the accumulation of dyes, inks, threads and paint. The ‘Senior Cord’ inspired mementos of the floods on the raincoat reconceptualise and deconstruct the typical raincoat into a garment that reflects the disastrous events of the floods and the experiences of the victims.

ARTWORK PROCESS

To create my artwork, I hand stitched calico into a raincoat. Next, I painted on the mementos and let them dry. While the raincoat was drying, I coffee stained some extra calico fabric to make it look weathered and old, then wrote on some of the flood victims’ stories on it and glued them to the raincoat. To make the map I started by accumulating layers of blue dyes and white inks onto it. I then watered down some blue paint and poured it onto the fabric. Finally, I glued on some thread shapes.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Poppy Folgate

I am a 17 year old artist living on Tamborine Mountain where there are lots of rainforests and we have a close connection with nature. I like realism and commonly use pencils and acrylic paint to create artworks. My main inspiration is what is happening around me, whether it’s a social issue or just a change in seasons. Creating art gives me an escape, it brings me peace to focus on what's in front of me. My goal as an artist is to convey the same sense of peace to the viewer.
