ARTIST STATEMENT

Childhood is often seen as it’s own precious, yet malleable, state of mind; a key time in a person’s history. Being a time of joy, childhood is full of new and exciting experiences, culture impacting each experience in it’s own unique way. Based in a personal context, the following works document the impact of a dramatic culture shift during childhood, celebrating the moments of joy and exploration these cultures created through my childhood years. Adaptations from Vermeer’s originals act as a comment on the differences between life in the 1500’s versus now and Dutch and Australian culture.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Ornate handmade frames constructed using MDF, air dry clay, dowel and gold spray paint frame self portraits painted using acrylic paint.
