ARTIST STATEMENT
With the prevalence of technology, our health and ability to connect with reality has diminished. I explore this loss of connection in my work through ‘light’ and setting which symbolizes the physical effects technology has on our health, behaviours, and perception. I highlight society’s choice to remain ignorant to the significant impacts we suffer socially and mentally from normalized overconsumption of phones. I explore my fascination with society’s condemnation of addiction that suddenly dissipates once one is shared by the majority. Drug addictions are shamed, yet technology addictions are dismissed as normal and embraced, despite both equally damaging our health.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I drew inspiration for my work from my personal experiences at school. My choice in the setting and clothing of the work derives from behaviours I notice in myself and my peers. Lunchtime should be a social period of the day but when I walk around at lunchtime everyone is on their phones. Couples, friends, groups, all unengaged in conversation with the people beside them and the common denominator is a phone.
