A series of five images reflecting the human experience of finding your identity, appropriating artwork Girl with a Pearl Earring.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The End of an Era tells a story of a woman who has fought for herself, against herself, struggling with her identity and purpose. The signature pearl earring is inspired by Johannes Vermeer’s oil painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring. The artwork captures the woman’s new life, dressed in elegant clothing, appropriating the style of Marilyn Monroe. Soft warm lighting enforces the idea of happiness and contentment. The pictures illustrate the story of a literal and metaphorical journey taken by the woman, the process of her finding her identity, and the journey she makes through her day-to-day life.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Through a Contemporary Context, I reflected on the concept of finding your identity within my artwork through photography. I wish to present the journey and of an individual finding their identity, challenging the viewer to explore the concept. Johannes Vermeer’s classical oil painting Girl with a Pearl Earring heavily influenced the sculpting of the images, specifically with theme and clothing. The photographs capture a woman wearing pearl earrings, appropriating Vermeer’s timeless artwork. The motif of the pearl earring clearly appropriates the famous painting.
