ARTIST STATEMENT

Our world is changing by the minute, modern advancements have made a barrier between us and nature. Investigating the natural environment my artwork works with the 'new future of urban expansion in modern cities'. Incorporating the concept of biophlic urbanism - an emerging urban design strategy to integrating nature into urban fabric – challenging my idea on the effects to the environment and connection of people and nature. The greenery-filled buildings symbolize my interpretation of a modern city street, with people swimming within amid aquatic life, portrayed with light forming shadows of a school of fish 'blending' in with the swimmers.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I began drawing with digital media and processes using Procreate using multiple layers for buildings, people, and animations. The swimmers were created separately to simulate the different depths and movement found in water. While making ‘When Two Worlds Collide’, I was fascinated with architectural buildings that incorporate living things – nature, how it can create a better and beautiful environment and essentially the beauty of nature can be seen everywhere. I printed my work on a colour poster – Coated Bond and projected the swimmers, imitating ‘living nature’ using transparency in the school of fish to communicate our connectedness.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Charlize Calalec

I enjoy sight-seeing and find the beauty of various environments which inspires me in my artworks. I like making my artworks dreamlike – a dimension to alternate world. Working with contemporary media, I tend to use digital drawing and projecting work to give my work movement and faux texture.
