A Reflection of Time and Civilisation Painting
Inspired by the historical narrative from Mareeba and how modern women view their history.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Based on two women from different generations seated and having a drink together at a bar in Mareeba. This arrangement symbolises a woman’s connection to her history and the sympathy and pain modern women hold for their past generations, relating to how the past is viewed by the present. The painting is realistic and shows meaning in composition and positioning, along with the clothing and colours used to represent the two characters through their symbolism. This resonates with me when I would sit with my grandmother and she’d show me photos from her generation and I would reflect on how women have changed.

ARTWORK PROCESS

It was important I chose a setting that held meaning in terms of Mareeba and would provide an appropriate setting to arrange a symbolic placement of the characters and explore colours, depth and contrast. The local pub was used with photos for reference of women, sitting and chatting at the bar. It draws from my IA2 ceramic, taking women’s historical image and turning it into two women from different generations seated and having a drink together at a bar in Mareeba.
