April: Open like a Flower Painting
Inspired by stimuli at the Mareeba Heritage Museum relating to female expectations and stereotypes.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I created this artwork using a personal and contemporary lens to promote the topic of self-love and body positivity. I believe the female body should be portrayed without any alterations or changes to natural features, figures and shapes. To promote and normalize diversity in the LGBTQ+ pride movement through the portrayal of a rainbow colour scheme, which reflects the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender. This painting is named after myself as I connect deeply with its focus. The meaning of my artwork. Like a flower blooms, I believe humans can blossom into their true selves.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The concept of my artwork is positive body image and promotion of diversity within the LGBTQ+ movement as they are both topics that connect personally with me. Meaning is communicated through visual metaphors, shapes and colours. The floral background metaphorically symbolizes the growth of individuals into their true selves. Body shapes promote self-love through their natural representation. The rainbow colour scheme represents the spectrum of gender and sexuality.
