The Cycle Digital Illustration
The Cycle showcases an hourglass with two scenarios depicting the beginning of life and the end of a journey.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The mysterious time period between death and rebirth is an essential foundation surrounding the concept of reincarnation. In society, it is frowned upon to speak any topics regarding death, while in contrast, birth is celebrated and worshipped. Depriving from Buddhist and East Asian beliefs and traditions, I will utilise symbolistic elements to depict my concurrent knowledge on the broad beliefs of reincarnation. The Cycle will showcase, similar to the ‘chicken or egg’ paradox, for life to occur, the predecessor, death needs to be completed and so forth.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Through the creation of this artwork, a digital art program was used to sketch, colour and render. Research on Buddhist beliefs and symbols on rebirth and East Asian beliefs on death were heavily reference within The Cycle. The character used in both scenarios, were purposely positioned to create a coherent process of them falling at the end of their life, to rising when rebirthing. It was essential that both scenarios contradicted each other, and through this I chose colour palettes that contrast.
