ARTIST STATEMENT
Like a ripple in the ocean, our actions reverberate throughout the physical and social world. 'The Unravelling Sea' explores the direct relationship between humans and the natural world, that is sacred and vital to the survival of Earth’s ecosystems. I created a variety of ropes using wrapping techniques acting as a metaphor; the future of our Earth is in our hands, and it is like a delicate rope; if we don’t act now, we will watch as the ‘rope’ unravels before us.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I used macramé rope for the basis of each induvial rope, which I folded twice to create four strands. I then wrapped different colours of blue and green embroidery thread to create a variety of cool toned ropes to represent the depth and shallow of the ocean. I used plastic bags found in my house and cut around to create a long strip of plastic to wrap around the macramé in the same technique. Each rope was then weaved through the metal grid and attached together to create the illusion of one singular long rope.
