The capitalism of a woman's body Sculpture
plaster and papier machie sculpture

ARTIST STATEMENT

Women in fashion have been exploited for their beauty and body for centuries. America is considered the power nation of capitalism and media. Women have been used as pin up girls to sell magazines, fashion and the everyday essentials. The body has been stained in coffee to represent print media of the past. American money is replacing the face to indicate the insignificance of the woman and the importance of monetary wealth. Corporations hide exploitation by making it look beautiful. This artwork speaks for all those women in sweat shops making fist nations richer.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I use brainstorming to start the process. Words ignite images in me and lead me to research issues, artists and art movements of the past for ideas. I am tactile and like to see how I can manipulate materials to construct my sculptures. How about if.....? What if...? Why...? are all in my planning process.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ashton Fahey

I am a senior student who uses art to express myself, visions and my thoughts. I like to work with common materials and transform these into emotive sculptures. I love fashion and pushing the boundaries of expectations and labels. Everything is inspirational. My school has been my haven to grow. Art has always been my favourite subject and I get lost in creating for hours.
