Our Future Rocks Sculpture
Sculpture using second hand clothing and fabric to create mountains to represent the clothing waste impact on poor countries

ARTIST STATEMENT

'A ragged cliff in Ghana, some twenty metres high, is formed not of earth and stone but of unwanted clothing’. Quote from "The War on Waste." I was inspired by this reality to create ‘Our Future Rocks!’ a sculptural installation which educates viewers on how excessive consumerism, particularly in the fashion industry, greatly damages the environment. The mountainous structures with bright coloured fabric draped like layers of sediment propose an eye-catching, yet sad image of what our landforms could look like in the future if we continue on this unsustainable and highly materialistic path, dark peep holes hide between the fabric inviting the audience

ARTWORK PROCESS

The sculptures are made from second hand clothing from me, my family and friends. I used bright and unnatural colours to suggest that these mountain are ‘unnatural’ and ‘toxic looking’ to demonstrate the harm clothing waste has on the environment. I layered thin strips of fabric to resemble natural layers of sediment that form in rocks/mountains to show how the tons and tons of fabric waste we throw into landfill will soon become the foundations for sedimentary layers. The structures are large to draw attention and structured over chicken wire. There are small peep holes that have small sculptures inside.
