ARTIST STATEMENT
Fascinatingly, Secular museums explore sacred spaces when religious artworks are displayed. My body of work, titled Secular, Sacred, Street discovers alternate ways of representing sacred imagery in secular places. This is through the concept of applying pop and street art to religious imagery. This communicates a contemporary issue of living in an increasingly secular society, in which religion has less influence on people’s lives. This artwork exemplifies the idea that there is no hierarchy of culture to disrupt placement of religious imagery. Thereby I created an art piece that is distinct from the traditional commercial work of the gallery/museum.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Linoleum printmaking techniques were applied to various religious symbols and then reproduced on tissue paper. These multi-coloured images were then layered onto the canvas using collage techniques. The central figure has been painted with contrasting acrylic colours, and the halo highlighted with the application of gold leaf.
