ARTIST STATEMENT
Have you ever stopped and noticed the abundance of birds in our cities and around our homes? ‘Simultaneous Evolution’ demonstrates the unlikely interconnectedness of our constructed urban environment and animals (birds) that have adapted to live in it. The installation explores how human urbanisation culture has forced animals to adapt, live and raise young in contemporary urban environments. The eggs explore how birds have managed to continue life in cracks and non-place spaces of our constructed environment. The colourful birds painted on bricks directly link animals to urbanisation, displaying the simultaneous evolution of us and the natural world around us.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The installation includes a wide range of birds found in the local area, painted onto collected cement pavers to represent the natural world integrating into the built suburban environment. The bird's nests were collected from the local area and through research, the eggs were painted to resemble the actual eggs of these birds. The projected branches represent the combined habitat of the birds.
