ARTIST STATEMENT

Our sense of sight induces our sense of touch. We are constantly seeing textures, everywhere we look. My work investigates the use of textures and materials, as well as how people perceive and imagine them to feel. This piece of art converts actual texture into implied texture. A digital manipulation of a photo of a previous textural piece served as the foundation for this work. The artwork employs multi-coloured flat shapes in pinks and purples to create a textural effect, prompting viewers to consider how this might affect their sense of touch.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Working in the formal context, the idea for this artwork came from wanting to turn actual texture into implied texture. A photo was taken from my previous artwork and was digitally manipulated until it was aesthetically pleasing. The image of the digital manipulation was projected and traced. Following this, it was painted in acrylic in colour blocks that were based on the digital manipulation. The colour blocks required several coats of paint and their placement was randomly selected.
