ARTIST STATEMENT
'Consume' combines and distorts collaged imagery to explore the ugly realities of our personal indulgences. Illustrating the nature of contemporary societies overconsuming, abusive, polluting, and detached relationship with the natural world. Symbolizing humanity through the depiction of an anthropomorphic rabbit, alluding to the rapidness at which society consumes the world, but at what cost? Selectively using colour to contrast the disconnect, deception and coldness of man to the pureness of the natural world. Inviting audiences to consider the consequences of their harmful actions and develop an empathetic perspective on our mistreatment of animals at the hands of our abusive animal testing industries.
ARTWORK PROCESS
This painting was created by combining and distorting imagery to illustrate a new narrative. Selectively applying colour, to communicate my perception of the disconnect and deception connecting man to the natural world. The final work conveys a contemporary issue using the traditional practice of limning painting, popular in 16th century and prized in the European courts. A fine haired brush was used to apply acrylic paint and capture the subject matter in miniscule detail. As such when viewing the work audiences will find the subject matter slowly revealing itself as they focus on the tiny dioramas within the composition.
